It's hard to pinpoint what genre this movie falls into: action, thriller, horror, all of the above, none of the above. The movie features the best of all these genres: a fast pace and dynamic directing, a tense, claustrophobic atmosphere and gritty, no-nonsense characters, peppered with an overwhelming sense of doom and a few genuinely frightening moments. One of the movie's strong points is the fact that the horror scenes are handled in a subtle, understated kind of way, without relying on CGI or fake blood. It also manages to avoid the pitfalls of cheap scares and cheesy dialog so <more>
sadly abundant these days in horror movies . On the other hand, the plot does have a few holes, and some of the outdoor shots look a bit amateurish, but my guess is that you'll probably be too wrapped up in what's going on to notice it much. All in all, true effort went into making "Outpost" a different type of horror movie as opposed to the recent onslaught of torture-porn, cookie-cutter, serial-killer copycat movies flooding the market lately . It's a truly entertaining ride, and definitely worth a watch.
Surprisingly TENSE Modern Military Horror (by Rabh17)
The story is spare and lean without being ludicrous. This is no shambling gun-happy zombie shootfest. This is a War Story in the old style with a dark shadow of Twilight Zone.A Mercenary band is recruited to secure an old outpost in the middle of nowhere in Eastern Europe. Turns out the outpost used to be a Nazi Experiment. An Experiment that either succeeded Horribly well or went Evilly Bad. What follows is sharp tension and despair as the men, lead by DC Pullo from Rome , are picked off by a force of -- you don't even know exactly what they are-- dead or undead or something No Longer <more>
Either. What's stellar about this movie is the tension. The lighting. the bare, wet concrete set and the masterful use of shadow. The washed out color combined with the fog, the rain and the scraggly forest set the tone of a 'very bad place'. You KNOW what the Bad things are-- but you are on the edge waiting for them to appear RIGHT NOW-- but they don't. . .yet. The characters are not the usual cardboard military cutouts, so it begins to matter to the viewer what happens. Last of all, usually in a horror flick-- by the time you see the Swastika-- it's a lame Scare tactic that's become a joke to the viewer.Here-- it's chilling.Pop this one in at Midnight-- Preferably when it's raining.
Definitely one of the best Nazi horror movies (by rondje-43191)

Straight to video gem (by nwestwood1)
A work mate lent me this on the off chance and I was pleasantly surprised. I initially thought this would be the usual straight to video crap. However their was a really good story in this film. I like the comparisons of Predator and to some extent The Keep. The premise of indestructible Nazis materialising as & when, created from a long forgotten experiment is a superb idea. Ray Stevenson like Jasan Statham is one of those rare things, a Brit who can carry an action/horror film. He was great in Rome and I have high expectations of him in the upcoming Punisher sequel. Back to the film, <more>
just because it bypasses the cinema, dos-en't mean it's rubbish!! Check it out
Must admit did not have high expectations of this film, but as turns out is very good. The storyline is abit tried and tested, seen a few similar, but where this film is better than others is it doesn't try to be over the top in the horror or gore effects although there are a few gory scenes. Instead of making the scares action packed or very visual,it relies on trying to make the viewer see what the men see and hear and makes you wonder how you would react in their situation-i can only compare it to the feeling of anticipation got when you saw jaws for the 1st time compared to how sequels <more>
of jaws made you feel,i.e. in jaws little was seen of the shark, but the threat of danger seemed real enough to scare, where as in the sequels it relied on the visuals which were good, but had no where near the desired effect. Am sure this film will appeal to both action and horror fans alike, and if you like the odd sci-fi thrown in you will be in heaven...9 outa 10 in my opinion.
One of the "must see" horror movies of 08 (by zoot_suit44)
When browsing for a movie to watch at the local video store one night, I came across Outpost. I had noticed that the lead actor was Ray Stevenson, an actor I was very keen to see, as I am looking forward to the upcoming Punisher film, with Stevenson in the lead role. I must say I was incredibly surprised about this film. Being a fan of horror and action films, this movie catered to everything you could possibly look forward to. Set in a war torn Europe in the present day, a group of mercenaries from English to Russian and American soldiers, are hired to investigate an old military bunker and <more>
search for a particular item of interest for a mysterious business man whom hired them. What follows is a fight for survival. Although i wont give away any spoilers, I must say that the best thing about this film was it's slow burning build up, eerie suspense and atmosphere, these things carried this film to deliver a very heart pounding climax with believable acting. The cinematography of the bunker particularly was so gritty, it ensured a sense of claustrophobia. It delivered a fine horror story that used "horror techniques" precisely, including, most importantly, a horror movie ending. My only criticism is that it was over far to quickly, though i was very impressed with it's pace. So, If you find in need of watching a B horror movie that impresses, Outpost is definitely a must. Underrated by most, i gave this film a 9/10, and i believe it is a must see of this year.
Outpost was quite a surprise for me, and that means in a good way. I remember hearing about it a while ago but forgot all about it. I had the chance to see the movie recently and I sat down without any expectations at all. I figured it would be your typical B movie with horrible acting, but boy was I wrong. The first 10 minutes of the movie had me convinced that it would be a lot better than I had anticipated.Memories surfaced of Dog Soldiers, mainly because a large portion of the Mercenaries team were of British, Scottish and Irish background. The cast mainly were from UK, which was nice to <more>
see them all acting different roles Russians, etc, however poorly they did the accents .One of the great things about Outpost is the setting. You really get a feel for a war torn country and the bunker itself seems rather eerie. The cast did a great acting job and to actually see some proper firefights for once was nice and realistic. The Mercenaries acted in a team, calling out when they are moving, setting, reloading and giving off information that would help the group move to cover, etc. Nice touch! The actual story was pretty good as well, but I won't ruin that here. Basically it is a mixture of horror and action with lots of suspense. The director deserves credit for being able to make a lot of things believable, as well as putting together the story into something that isn't a mess.I gave this an 8 out of 10, because in my opinion, this is on the same level/quality as Dog Soldiers. Not a mega budget, but the actual story/acting/casting/direction all deserve credit. I would have paid to see this in the cinema, it was just that good. A movie that will probably go missed by lots, but for those who watch it then it most likely will be a surprise just like it was for me. If you watch it, don't expect too much from it and then you'll be able to enjoy it that much more as everything unfolds into "Wow, this is much better than I thought it would be".Don't miss this, it's definitely worth it.
Nice scifi/horror/war/action movie (by charlesdias)
If you ever played the famous game PC and console Wolfenstein, you will love this movies.I like too much stories mixing horror and ominous Nazi scientific experiments. It's a very interesting and prolific genre. Sometimes you get some very poor stories, but it's not the case of this one. It's simple, it's plain and it's interesting with a nice mix of suspense, horror and action.I like the way the actors played the characters, they are very realistic. Production is also very nice, no CGI at all, but only the good old way of creating weird and dark places. If you want to <more>
see a cool mystery/horror movies with no fuzzy plot, this is the one. I recommend.
I have watched a lot of these types of movies and let me say that this surprised me a lot. I expected a low quality rubbish movie crap effects and crap storyline. I mean i wasn't all wrong but the plus points definitely outweigh the naff.the story goes as already previous mentioned. merc + team get hired in bar to scope out some remote "outpost" for no "real" reason at first , ah ha i hear u all say that cant be good. To be honest the formula ain't so surprising, but the way it is carried out is typically brit and hence not so bad. As it ends up there are some <more>
nice curves towards the "philidelphia ex" and the idea of the unified field theory, but hey its a thriller horror so don't expect too much lol. There was a review to dog soldiers, hostel blah blah blah, if u have seen hostel that is a load of crap it is no where near that kind of crap i say gory of course, although dear lord why it gets a sequel i don't know . Almost like the bunker but way better. all in all its a good supernatural movie but without the gross out and actually with an OK storyline that makes it OK to watch.Anyway this movie wasn't so bad, don't get me wrong its not one i would go pay to see if it were lined up with the biggies "indy, star trek, batman etc", but at the same time i would have paid to see it if it were on par with the off season "a" movies.I think if u like the genre it is definitely worth the time to see
